Fiscal 2013 Topics

New Products and Technologies

Developed the world’s largest projection size* thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD Head-up Display (HUD) for automobiles. This technology is expected to contribute to a reduction in traffic accidents, with the first products to be sold in around 2015.* As of October 2012, based on research by DENSO. Display size is approximately 10 inches with two meters distance from the driver.

Developed a new vision sensor that is 50% smaller than the Company’s previous sensor. It includes necessary sensor capabilities for the previous Lane Departure Warning (LDW) *1 system, as well as the Automatic High Beam (AHB) *2 control system, and is the world’s smallest*3 sensor to include both. Efforts to increase the operating temperature compared with previous sensors were successful, meaning that this is also the sensor with the greatest operating temperature range in the world *3.*1 System to alert the driver when the vehicle is crossing the lane boundary to help avoid accidents caused by changing lane.
*2 System to automatically switch between high and low headlight beams according to the presence or absence of preceding or oncoming vehicles to increase the driver’s visibility at night and avoid dazzling other motorists.
*3 As of July 2012, based on research by DENSO.
Release
Developed world’s largest display panel* by increasing the width from 8 inches to 12.3 inches, allowing two display modes at any time.* The world’s largest mass-produced car display panel as of July 2012.
Developed new laser radar as part of a system for avoiding or reducing the effects of collisions, the first of its kind for compact cars.
Release
Developed a more accurate pedestrian collision detector for the Pop-Up Hood** The hood is raised immediately before a collision with a pedestrian to create a larger buffer space between the hood and hard components, including the engine, and reduce the seriousness of pedestrian head injuries.
Release
Developed new millimeter-wave radar that has a longer and wider detection range, helping to improve responsiveness even when traveling at high speed.

In fiscal 2014, we will leverage our strengths in millimeter-wave radar, laser radar, cameras, and sonar to coordinate core sensing, control, and human-machine interface (HMI) technologies as a system supplier and develop cutting-edge safety technology.
Also, as we gather increased data about not only safety but also convenience and comfort, improving HMI technologies in cars has become a more important problem to tackle. For this reason, we continue to work on development of communication between cars and between cars and infrastructure.
