R&D Structure

In a global environment of continued severe competition, DENSO has further strengthened its R&D development in order to create new value and produce new technologies. In conjunction with this, we have instituted roadmaps to track the progress for each development span from the short term (up to 5 years) through the medium term (up to 10 years) to the long term (11 years or more). These roadmaps are updated every year, incorporating changes in society and regulations, and shared between each division and engineering research and development center so that decisions can be made about which projects to start and which to alter or terminate. Roadmaps are used throughout the Group, including proposals for unique kinds of value and technologies in each region. Presently, the Company’s R&D Division makes decisions about new technology proposals, but in the future we aim to build a global R&D structure centered on European and North American sites.

Development System

In order to develop products to meet the needs and circumstances of different global regions, we have bolstered our technological development system based around technical centers in six regions: the United States, Europe, Asia & Oceania, China, India, and Brazil. In fiscal 2013, we held opening ceremonies at technical centers in Brazil and India and started development work at both. We are also boosting cutting-edge development in the United States and Europe. In Japan, we began construction of an evaluation facility for the development and evaluation of power electronics products such as inverters used in hybrid vehicles and a new trial production facility to increase development efficiency through a high level of collaboration between engineers and technicians. In fiscal 2013, our R&D expenditure was ¥335.5 billion, of which 12% was spent in overseas segments, but through system expansion we intend to increase that percentage.
