Introducing DENSO history, from our establishment until today.

We established the foundations of our management including (i) technologies and manufacturing skills; (ii) the concept of "Quality First;" (iii) the enhancement of our production and sales organization; and (iv) the management policies anticipating global trends.

1949

Nippondenso Co., Ltd., a separate entity from Toyota Motor Co., Ltd., is established.

1953

Technical cooperation with Robert Bosch GmbH of Germany is started.

The agreement allowed us to expand our technical expertise from outside the company to achieve world-class engineering.

1954

By establishing service plants in respective regions, the Assigned Service Station System is started.

Today, a global service network of around 4,600 bases is in place to enhance services for end users in different regions (e.g. repair and replacement of our products).

Our Technical Training Center is established.

The principles of "Monozukuri is Hitozukuri (our performance relies on our people)" and "engineering and technique, hand in hand" are still being practiced today.

1955

The Injection Pump Preparation Section is established.

We began to expand our business fields beyond the development and production of electrical components we established at the time of our founding. Today, we operate in various product areas such as powertrain, thermal systems, electronics, and driving control & safety systems. We have a competitive edge in being able to deliver entire systems instead of single products.

1961

The Deming Prize, the most prestigious award for quality control, is received.

Efforts made by all employees to win the prize laid the foundations for the concept and our culture of "Quality First."

1965

The start of operations at Ikeda Plant (in Aichi Prefecture) and Hiroshima Plant are celebrated.

A production base separate from our headquarters was established for the first time. At present, we manufacture our products at more than 140 group companies around the world.

1966

In the United States, a sales office in Chicago and branch offices in Los Angeles and Detroit are established.

The first sales office outside Japan was established in anticipation of global trends, including trade liberalization.

1968

Our IC Research Center is established.

In-house R&D of integrated circuit (IC) was launched at an early stage in anticipation of electronic control for automotive components. Today, electronic components constitute some of the main products that we sell.

We expanded our operations outside Japan as part of our aim to be a global company which develops and manufactures competitive products on a global scale. 

1971

Nippondenso of Los Angeles, Inc., our first overseas sales company, is established.

Operations outside Japan helped enhance our engineering capabilities and the commercial value of our products.

1972

Nippondenso Thailand Co., Ltd. and Nippondenso (Australia) Pty. Ltd., our first manufacturing companies outside Japan, are established.

We decided to manufacture products near customers in respective regions to meet their needs.

1977

Our first WorldSkills Competition gold medal is received.

Since our founding, we've invested resources into skills training and it has produced results. Today, DENSO has earned 63 WorldSkills medals since 1977, and medalist work with engineers in technology development to bring our products from prototype to production.

1979

Our first Okochi Memorial Production Prize (Production Engineering Section), a prestigious award in Japan, is received.

Production lines and equipment are manufactured in-house to attain the product precision and quality we pursue.

1984

Nukata Testing Center is opened.

As a parts manufacturer, we opened a test course at an early stage. We have evaluation facilities equivalent to those of automakers to ensure product performance and quality assurance beyond customers’ expectations.

We changed our company name to DENSO, with Nippon (Japan) removed, to make even greater strides as a global company. Today, we are working toward our 2020 goal to "help build a more environmentally friendly and safer society."

1991

DENSO Research Laboratories is opened.

We work on R&D in anticipation of technologies five to 20 years in the future. Our research range from semiconductor materials to micro algae that produce oil.

1994

The DENSO Philosophy is adopted.

A philosophy that meets current needs was adopted by inheriting the spirit of our original mission statement (our corporate philosophy since our founding) to remind ourselves our corporate philosophy to contribute to the world with our technologies and products.

1996

Our new corporate name, DENSO Corporation, is adopted.

To become a truly global company, the company name was changed from Nippondenso to DENSO. (Nippon, the Japanese word for Japan, was removed.)

2000

The "DENSO ECOVISION 2005" environmental management goal is adopted.

DENSO shared the common environmental management goal globally for the first time. We increasingly worked on target-based activities (e.g. reductions in CO2 emissions from business operations, achievement of zero emissions), in addition to environmentally friendly manufacturing.

2005

DENSO Training Academy Thailand, our first overseas regional training center, is established.

A system was established to offer education for engineers and technicians (which had been offered at the global head office) on a regional level.

2013

DENSO Group Long-term Policy 2020 is formed.

Worldwide, 170,000 employees continuously work to contribute to society by developing technologies and products that help preserve the environment and ensure security and safety.
