Contribution to society

Sustainability

In 1994, Nippondenso opened a volunteer support center and began social contribution activities in earnest. However, the full-scale social contribution activities at the company actually dated back to the establishment of DENSO TAIYO CO., LTD. in March 1984 and to the start of Operation Raleigh sponsorship in the fall of that year. DENSO formulated its "Basic Policy for Social Contribution" in 1997 and has since promoted activities in the three main areas of welfare for the disabled, youth development, and environmental preservation.

In 1999, to mark the 50th anniversary of the company’s foundation, DENSO began a new international program for the welfare of people with disabilities in Asia and established the Wheelchairs And Friendship Center of Asia (WAFCA) in Japan and the Wheelchairs And Friendship Center of Asia (Thailand) (WAFCAT) in Thailand. WAFCA was the first example in Japan of a company becoming involved in the establishment of a non-profit organization as part of its social contribution efforts. The parent organization for the activities in Asia is WAFCAT, which was established as a foundation. The activities are supported by DENSO (THAILAND) CO., LTD. (DNTH), which is an overseas affiliated firm.

In consideration of social issues and the environment surrounding the company, the "Basic Policy for Social Contribution" has been updated twice since its formulation, and is now the "DENSO Group Basic Policy for Corporate Citizenship Activities." The policy is to take action in three priority areas (1. Harmony with the environment, 2. Security and safety in communities, 3. Human resource development (1) Youth development, and (2) Welfare for persons with disabilities). In addition to these priority areas, efforts are also made to create a culture of employee participation, by supporting the volunteer activities of employees and striving to create a culture in which employees voluntarily participate in social contribution activities.

Start of sponsorship for Operation Raleigh by the Scientific Exploration Society of the U.K.

This was an international event organized by the Scientific Exploration Society of the U.K. to commemorate the achievements of British explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. The aim was to bring together the young people of the world in a round-the-world science, service, and adventure project. The three-month adventure tours were called "Phases" and consisted of ecological research, camping, and nautical training in jungles, mountains, and caves. It was also a trip to perform community service and come into contact with other cultures around the world. The "Zebu" sailing ship became a topic of discussion as it traveled to the various locations.

A new environmental education program for children was devised based on the new concept of "environment" x "education." The "ECO Ranger" name is a combination of the two key words "ecology" (i.e. the environment) and "ranger" (i.e. the keeper of a forest). The key characteristic of the program is its hands-on type field learning. The aim is to use enjoyable field learning for enlightenment and education on environmental protection.

DENSO employees and retirees visit the elementary schools as "special lecturers" and give the special classes as part of the regular science classes, so the activity not only meets the needs of the schools, but has also helped deepen understanding of the initiatives of the company.
