Macarena Iglesias: Unlocking the Potential of Connections Between People and Machines
Macarena Iglesias Álvarez, Manufacturing Manager at DENSO SISTEMAS TÉRMICOS ESPAÑA (DTSP)
Profile
Macarena started her journey at DENSO in 2007 as a trainee with a group of 8 European engineers as part of the first generation of the TEC Graduate Development Program. During the program, she worked on various projects at DNCZ, DMUK, DNMN, DNTS, and DNJP, gaining valuable cross-functional international experience.
With a background in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Vigo, she has taken on various roles in Quality and Manufacturing. She began as a Production Supervisor at DNTS in Poirino, Italy, and has led the manufacturing department at DTSP in Vigo, Spain, since 2019.
Where she works
DENSO SISTEMAS TÉRMICOS ESPAÑA (DTSP), headquartered in Vigo, Spain, has operated successfully since 2004. The company specializes in producing and selling car air conditioners, heaters, and engine cooling modules for European car manufacturers.
As the Head of Manufacturing at DTSP, Macarena plays a crucial role in overseeing production planning, managing all production areas, promoting lean manufacturing and a safety-first culture, and driving product and process modifications to meet and exceed customer demands.
Constant connection with both people and machines
I am highly motivated by the continuous interaction with both people and machines. This combination enables me to fully utilize my engineering and individual skills. Moreover, the ongoing challenges we face in achieving the company's objectives also serve as a source of motivation for me.
Every day, I approach my work as if it were my first day. I always keep this in mind to ensure that I give my best effort each day, contributing to the future of our company and, therefore, to the future of our people. My favorite part of the job is obviously the people and process management, and of course, when I work directly on Gemba.
Fully committed with a problem-solving mindset to overcome challenges
A few years ago, a situation arose due to an error made by a colleague in the Logistics department. As a response, all departments, including Logistics, Productions, Quality, Process Technology, TIE, and Maintenance, came together to address the issue and prevent any negative impact on our customers. Instead of focusing on assigning blame, we dedicated our efforts to finding a solution and ensuring the best outcome for our customers. I feel like an integral part of the team, where I can use my leadership skills and positive energy to drive the team towards success. Collaboration is our strength as we work together as a team and respect the different work approaches of diverse people in diverse circumstances.
In our recent initiatives, we have been committed to the reutilization of materials, mainly focusing on recycling and repurposing plastics and oil. Additionally, we prioritize resource optimization by implementing automated processes and standardization practices aimed at improving overall efficiency. The potential for encountering new quality issues or creating a negative atmosphere among the direct labor associates is a concern due to the difficulties in effectively communicating the need for resource reduction. This is also one of the most critical challenges I encounter, as I need to effectively manage and improve the budget while ensuring the commitment of all our people. How significant is this challenge to me? It is what keeps my commitment level at 200%.
Setting the standard and keeping the team highly motivated
At DTSP, we prioritize our customers and encourage every person to contribute to the company's goals with their projects and ideas. In my current role, it’s essential to have communication skills and a problem-solving mindset. Ensure that you meet the needs of our customers by delivering the right quantities, maintaining appropriate timelines, and upholding high-quality standards, all while effectively managing costs.
Completing a goal when resources are lacking presents one of the toughest challenges. At such times, it is essential to set a strong example by staying motivated, fostering creativity, and approaching all situations with a positive and proactive mindset. I always encourage my team to share ideas and collaborate to achieve results, leading by example and maintaining high motivation. Ultimately, our aim is to support both associates' and the company's excellent health.
Diversity among people leads to a variety of ideas
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential, not optional. To ensure the survival of our company, we must prioritize DE&I. It is crucial in the current and future VUCA environment. People's diversity is the source of diverse ideas. Diversity makes us dynamic and active rather than static.
As a woman in a historically male-dominated environment, I believe it's essential for our organization and company to prioritize gender diversity to ensure growth and profitability. By taking the right approach to gender diversity, we can become more effective and efficient.
What do you like about DENSO?
I enjoy working continuously with different people and technology challenges, and I take pride in being a part of the large DENSO global family. I appreciate the opportunities that DENSO provides for professional and personal development, leveraging the contributions of all team members to achieve the company's objectives.
Working with Macarena
I had the privilege to hire Macarena in 2004 within “Manufacturing Excellence Talent Program” for Thermal Product Group. The program aimed at creating the future pipeline of Heads of Manufacturing and Operations in Thermal Plants. I was impressed by her positive attitude and willingness to contribute positively to the solution. She showed an incredible ability to create trust and cooperation within the teams fostering an environment where people felt secure to express their opinion, included and empowered.
This is a leadership trait she has further consolidated in her career: everyone feels they belong and all energies are devoted to facing the common enemy and challenges and seizing big opportunities. I’m very proud of her!
