Have the courage to take the initiative and make a start

Leaders and managers should prioritize inspiring, engaging, and developing people while creating and promoting a culture of collaboration.

Throughout my career, I had the opportunity to interact with leaders and colleagues who were courageous in their approach. I noticed they didn’t wait for someone else to take the lead, inspiring me a lot. I often found that taking the lead, even when not expected of me, motivated my team members to come forward and work enthusiastically, and we could solve complex issues.

Sometimes, we see challenges as too big to deal with. However, by taking the lead and the first step, we discover that we have the backing and power of our people. We can effectively tackle any challenge with collaborative work and a focused mindset.

Another point I noticed about inspiring leaders is that they remove the fear of failure from our minds, which is crucial in the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) business environment. Even when faced with seemingly impossible tasks, we will be excited to accept the challenge and realize the desired outcome by removing the fear of failure from our minds. Such a leadership style brings people together and enhances collaboration.

A challenge can only grow your skills and competencies

As the former Head of PE (Production Engineering), my team and I focused on expanding off-highway ECM manufacturing to the South American region. I was challenged to develop a production line within a limited time and a challenging cost target to achieve customer milestones and project feasibility.

We accepted this challenge head-on and realized our target by developing new suppliers globally and adopting new process technologies. Even though our approach had many risks, we carefully considered each one and defined actions to manage them efficiently.

Over the course of 18 months, we worked tirelessly and overcame many hurdles and setbacks through collaboration and a "can-do" attitude. As a result, all members involved in the project grew their skills and competencies and became more valuable to our company. It was a win-win outcome.
