Co-op Spotlight: Hannah Pearl, Industrial & Operations Engineering Co-op

Aug. 6, 2020

Each year, students from top engineering colleges and universities across the country - Stanford, Ohio State, and University of Michigan to name a few -  join the DENSO Co-op program for the opportunity to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and put it to work.

Meet Hannah Pearl, a senior at the University of Michigan who is an Industrial and Operations Engineering Co-op, and has just completed her third internship at DENSO’s Battle Creek, Michigan location.

Hannah Pearl

What has been your favorite part of the program?

My favorite part of the internship is that the projects I have worked on have required me to learn new techniques, work with a variety of different people, and quickly adapt to changes in the project. I have worked with the autonomous guided cart project at DENSO’s thermal manufacturing facility in Battle Creek, Michigan for the past two summers and being able to be a part of this new wave of innovation is really exciting.

What was something unexpected you learned about automotive/mobility/manufacturing?

The fast pace of the auto industry was really surprising to me. Before working at DENSO, I assumed that the automotive industry was very stagnant, but after being at my internship, I’ve seen that there are constant innovations and changes happening internally at DENSO and externally with our customers. The fast pace change is something that was pleasantly unexpected and I really enjoy it.

How did this program prepare you for what you want to do after graduation?

This program has given me the skills to present to all different levels of management, how to plan and execute a project, and how to go push through roadblocks.

Anything else you’d like to add on your experience?

I have loved my time as an intern at DENSO because I really feel like I was able to do the work of a full-time engineer in my summers [with the company] and the people have been so great in my department and other parts of the company!
