SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (March 21, 2024) ― DENSO’s Guelph, Ontario, location has won a HeForShe Impact Award from the HeForShe Committee at the University of Guelph (UG), consisting of representatives from the School of Engineering, Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, and Gryphon Football Team. Each year, the university presents the award to an organization in the Guelph-Wellington area that is doing exemplary local work to help improve gender equity.

As part of the recognition, the Angel Gabriel Foundation has made a donation on DENSO’s behalf to Creative Encounters, a UG youth camp providing girls opportunities to explore engineering and science.

Since 2021, DENSO’s Guelph team has been an avid supporter of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) at the University of Guelph’s School of Engineering. The company has supported a wide range of initiatives, such as RiSE, a Women in Engineering conference at which UG alumni help students transition to the workforce, along with multiple youth programs, including Go ENG Girl, Go CODE Girl, Girl Guide Day and Creative Encounters.

“We are grateful to the University of Guelph for this award, as it reflects our focus on not only building a vibrant and inclusive culture at DENSO, but also in our community,” said John Klassen, president of DENSO’s Guelph location. “We know that diverse perspectives produce diverse solutions. We will continue to work with local groups to help people of all backgrounds gain exposure to STEM and its benefits.”

DENSO accepted the award during a March 19 award ceremony, where UG also announced winners of its Gender Empowerment and Ally Scholarships.

“DENSO’s generous support of Women in Engineering initiatives at the University of Guelph has been instrumental for girls and gender diverse youth to learn about engineering and in supporting current students on campus,” said Jana Levison, Ph.D., Doody Family Chair for Women in Engineering, UG. “Thank you to DENSO and congratulations on the HeForShe Impact Award.”

The DENSO Guelph team supports the surrounding community in other ways as well. It donates annually to the Guelph Food Bank, sponsors several local fundraising campaigns like the Tour de Guelph and Powerplay Youth Hockey Jamboree, and conducts its Build-a-Bike program each holiday season. Through the most recent Build-a-Bike event, the team built and donated 42 bicycles to the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition, increasing their total number of bikes donated to almost 200 since 2017.

Operating in Guelph for more than 20 years, DENSO’s 700 local team members work together daily to manufacture leading thermal solutions for major automakers and to advance the company’s Two Great Causes: Green – achieving carbon neutrality by 2035 – and Peace of Mind – creating a safe and seamless world for all.
