DENSO believes that artificial intelligence (AI) should exist to support everyone it touches.
DENSO AI sees people, sees the surroundings, and then thinks and acts on its own for the benefit of people.
For example, it gives the car advanced sensing capabilities that are superior to humans to support driver awareness.
In addition, it makes autonomous driving a reality. AI is indispensable in creating a society free of automobile accidents, where anyone can enjoy traveling freely.
DENSO is working toward development of AI that exists to think for and support people.

Voice Recognition Technology (1991-) Providing the Optimal Voice Interface in Cars

In 1991, we established a fundamental research center and at the same time we started voice recognition research using artificial intelligence. We focused our attention on improving recognition performance under conditions of typical in-vehicle noise and on developing technology to miniaturize algorithms to enable them to be run even on the small, in-vehicle CPU. Voice Recognition Technology was equipped on the DENSO NAVIRA navigation system developed in 1997 and subsequently employed as a car navigation system offered as a manufacturer's dealer option. Currently, we are enhancing the Voice Recognition Technology and are also researching an HMI that enables driving based on natural conversations between the driver and the car.

Neurocomputing (1997-) Achieving Human Advanced Intelligent Processing in In-Vehicle Computers

We are researching new information processing techniques that achieve advanced intelligent processing by imitating the electrical behavior of the brain's nerve cells (neurons and synapses) and the neural network. In 2000, we proposed a neuron model to configure neurohardware with small-scale digital circuits. Research into neurocomputing using memristor, a variable-resistance, non-volatile memory as synapses, began in 2013. Aiming for a dramatic reduction in electrical consumption, which is an issue in vehicles, we are working to implement a deep neural network.

    The Tokyo Branch Office was moved and expanded in January 2016 for the advancement of leading-edge technological development focusing on the field of safety and security and for development in the field of new business and new technologies. We continually hire highly skilled personnel for an accurate understanding of the most advanced technological trends and for increased cooperation with government agencies as well as universities and research institutes. Moreover, we participate in activities such as discovering new business based on the perspective of the end-user and timely analysis of the user's needs. We are conducting research to establish algorithms and a quality foundation for our AI research.

    The DENSO IT Laboratory (IT Lab) is a company established in 2000 that specializes in software research and development. Research proceeds with the freedom to explore ideas without being bound by the DENSO framework. Members of DENSO's fundamental research center and IT Lab have joined together to collaborate in the advancement of AI research

    The Silicon Valley Innovation Center (SVIC), which was established in 2011, is a base where joint development with local venture capitalists and universities, and research and development taking advantage of Silicon Valley's strengths takes place.
